ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine improving urban residents awareness of the impact of household activities on climate change with special reference to Abeokuta South, Ogun State. Specifically, the study aim to examine the causes of climate change, find out the awareness level of residents in Ogun state, investigate the impact of household activities on climate change and analyze how to improve urban residents awareness on climate change. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 141 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the causes of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions, manufacturing and industry produce emissions, cutting down forests to create farms or pastures and generating electricity and heat by burning, fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. The findings also revealed that the awareness level of residents in Ogun state is high. The findings further reveal that the impact of household activities on climate change is increase in atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, accelerated sea level rise, intense heat waves and loss of sea ice. Lastly, the study revealed that urban residents awareness on climate change be improved by Sharing news on social media, Hang up awareness posters, bring up real-life examples and holding public meetings. The study thereby recommend that there is need for government to invest in the development and production of economical and environment-friendly alternative sources of household energy such as biomass, natural gas, wind and solar energy in quantity that meet energy demand of the developing countries as this is the only provision for effective action against climate change
